But he doesn't know his words come out backwards! Zaniness ensues! The good townspeople are at turns concerned, amused, and horrified at some of the things that come out of his mouth. But it is an adorable book, and there is some tension and awkwardness as Reverend Robert Lee tries to have regular conversation or (worse!) when he holds a sermon. I'm kidding the book is 22 pages (24 if you count Quentin Blake's Afterword), so there is no time for drama. Character overcoming great odds and obstacles? Heartwarming, touching, grab a hanky! Dahl wrote more than 60 short stories and they have appeared in numerous collections, some only being published in book form after his death. Many were originally written for American magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, Harper's, Playboy and The New Yorker, then subsequently collected by Dahl into anthologies, gaining world-wide acclaim. He also had a successful parallel career as the writer of macabre adult short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943.
